It was built about 1820-30 and enlarged with a front tower in the 1870s-80s.","why_significant":"The church is considered an intact, representative example of 19th-century rural religious architecture in Cayuga County. It is the visual focal point of the crossroads and the only surviving reminder of the hamlet. The surrounding burial ground is significant for funerary art, with gravestones from the early 19th to mid-20th century.","narrative":"Mentz Church is a rectangular, gable-roofed frame building with clapboard siding at the crossroads of Mentz Church Road and McDonald Road, in farm country east of the village of Montezuma. Built around 1820-30 as a non-denominational meeting house on land donated by local farmers, it hosted circuit riders of several faiths and later became Methodist. In the 1870s-80s a square front tower with patterned shingles and a pyramidal roof was added. Inside are a small open sanctuary, late 19th-century pews and simple wainscoting. The church also served as the area's only public building, and a local grange met there from 1873. Services ended in 1954, though one summer service continued each year. Around the building lies a cemetery of roughly 225 marked graves dating from 1813 to the 1940s, with urn-and-willow stones, obelisks and classical forms. The listing rests on the church's architecture and the cemetery's funerary art. The town now owns the property and plans to restore it for community use.","period_of_significance":"1813 - early 1950s","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mid- and late 19th Century: vernacular","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Closed as a church in 1954; now owned by the town, which plans to restore it for community use.
