Its exterior reflects mid-century Greek Revival elements, while its façade and interior reflect late-nineteenth-century Protestant trends toward open, participatory worship spaces. It also documents the early history of Guilford and changing tastes in church design over nearly a century.","narrative":"Guilford Center Presbyterian Church is a one-and-one-half story wood-frame building on CR 36 in the small hamlet of Guilford Center, Chenango County. It stands on a cut-stone foundation under a broad metal-clad gable roof with a three-stage tower and short spire. The church grew through three building periods. Its heavy timber frame and foundation date from 1817, when members built a forty-by-fifty-foot meeting house largely through donated labor. In 1855 the building was enlarged, given a basement and tower, and fitted with a Greek Revival façade of the distyle in antis type. About 1896 the recessed porch was enclosed, creating a vestibule and prayer room, and the interior was reworked into an open auditorium with curved pews and a low platform. Those features reflect revivalist-era Protestant church design. Daniel S. Dickinson, later a U.S. senator, helped build the first church as a boy. The exterior remains largely intact to the 1890s, and the church is still in religious use.","period_of_significance":"1817-c1896","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; the exterior is intact to about 1896 apart from a 2003 accessible porch and aluminum siding on the tower.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.837662-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04001059.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001059/99b50f3808-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001059/99b50f3808-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Guilford_Center,_NY,_Presbyterian_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Guilford_Center,_NY,_Presbyterian_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316876","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guilford_Center_Presbyterian_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5615913"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chenango-county/guildford-center-presbyterian-church-04001059/"}
