It is also a largely intact, representative example of Italianate domestic architecture in Norwood.","narrative":"Built in 1861, this H-shaped Italianate brick house sits on a knoll at the northeast edge of Norwood, New York. Two rectangular blocks are joined by a brick and frame hyphen, with shallow hipped roofs, broad eaves, paired brackets and arched window lintels. An early twentieth century verandah with fluted Doric columns was added to the front, and remnants of a formal English garden with a Potsdam sandstone walkway survive. The house was built for Benjamin Gordon Baldwin, a lawyer who offered the Northern Railroad a right-of-way and land for a depot, helping to create the village that became Norwood. He owned the land on which the community developed and served as its benefactor and a leading politician until his death in 1873. Later occupants included the Fletcher family, whose daughter Louise was a community leader and founder of the local historical association. The house now holds five apartments, but enough interior fabric remains to suggest its former grandeur.","period_of_significance":"1861 - 1920s","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid 19th century: Italianate","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"The house has been divided into five rental apartments; its interior survives with moderate integrity, and the former carriage house is heavily altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.945293-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04000994.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000994/dae6a2bbbc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000994/dae6a2bbbc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"OneEagle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Baldwin_House_2020.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">OneEagle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Baldwin_House_2020.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321860","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Gordon_Baldwin_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4888717"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/st-lawrence-county/baldwin-benjamin-gordon-house-04000994/"}
