It later became the East Otto Town Hall.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is one of the last remaining structures representing early to mid-twentieth century rural education, under Criterion A. It is also a highly intact example of Colonial Revival civic architecture, under Criterion C. It shows professional design and factory-made materials, unlike most one-room district schools.","narrative":"Built in 1920-21 near the center of East Otto in western New York, this two-story, T-shaped wood-clad building was a consolidated school meant to replace scattered one-room district schools. It first offered two years of high school before students moved on to Cattaraugus High School, and it served as a high school until 1967, when statewide centralization sent students elsewhere. The Town of East Otto took the building in 1972 and now uses it as its town hall, with the town court in the basement. Designed in the Colonial Revival style, it has a balanced form, a columned center entrance with a small balustrade, and an octagonal cupola with an ogee dome that once served as a bell tower. Inside, the classrooms keep their wood floors, plaster walls, wainscoting and chalkboards. The architect and builder are unknown, but the craftsmanship and factory-made materials point to professional work. It was listed for its role in rural education and for its largely intact architecture.","period_of_significance":"1920-1953","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Owned by the Town of East Otto and used as the town hall, with the town court in the basement; the grounds are still used by the community.
