It shows hallmark Colonial farmhouse features of western Connecticut and eastern New York, such as a symmetrical facade, central chimney and paneled parlors. It retains a high degree of integrity, with most original floors, paneling, fireplaces and plaster intact.","narrative":"Set on the east side of Poundridge Road in South Salem, this two-and-one-half-story saltbox farmhouse was built around 1734, shortly after the Oblong area passed from Connecticut to New York. It has a heavy timber frame, clapboard siding, a five-bay facade, and a large central brick chimney around which the parlors, kitchen and keeping room are arranged. Much original fabric survives, including wide oak floors, raised paneling, fireplaces, a beehive oven and a smoke box. The Osborn family owned it until the Revolution, when it was awarded to Lieutenant Joel Bouton, whose descendants and the related Mead family held it until 1974. A shed dormer was added about 1930, and a restoration began in 1977. The house is described as one of only a handful of two-story Connecticut-type saltboxes still on their original foundations in New York State, and it was listed for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"c. 1734","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Colonial (Connecticut-style saltbox)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling; restored from 1977 onward, returning it to much of its original 18th-century condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.973487-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04000990.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000990/4972a08dca-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000990/4972a08dca-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthSalemNY_OsbornBoutonMeadHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthSalemNY_OsbornBoutonMeadHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323149","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborn%E2%80%93Bouton%E2%80%93Mead_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7105751"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/osborn-bouton-mead-house-04000990/"}
