It is also a well-preserved, relatively simple example of the brick depots built across North Carolina in the 1910s, distinguished by its large engaged loading dock.","narrative":"Built in 1914 by Southern Railway, this brick depot in North Wilkesboro measures 36 feet wide and 240 feet long and combined passenger and freight service under one hipped roof. The west end held white and colored waiting rooms and the depot office, while the larger freight section extends east to an open, engaged loading dock with heavy-timber posts. Wide eaves on carved wood braces give a hint of the Craftsman style, and a historic freight scale with fluted Doric columns still works. North Wilkesboro was founded as the western end of a rail line that arrived in 1890, and the railroad let the town tap timber and farm resources across several mountain counties. The depot is the only surviving historic depot of its kind west of Forsyth County along this route. It also represents the long, brick depots common in North Carolina in the 1910s. Passenger service ended in 1955, and the building is now vacant.","period_of_significance":"1914-1954","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Craftsman","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed current function is vacant.
