It sits on a courthouse square with three contributing memorial statues.","why_significant":"The courthouse was the center of county government for nearly a century and is the fifth permanent courthouse for Navarro County. It is an intact example of Beaux Arts public architecture, designed by Dallas architect James Edward Flanders, whose Corsicana building is one of only two of his courthouses that survive. Few exterior changes have been made since 1905.","narrative":"Navarro County's courthouse, at 300 W. 3rd Avenue in Corsicana, was completed in 1905 and replaced an 1881 building on the same site. Dallas architect James Edward Flanders designed it, and General Supply and Construction Company of Fort Worth built it. The three-story building rises above a raised basement and is faced in red Burnet granite and gray brick under a red clay tile roof. Ionic columns, pediments, round pavilion windows and a central open tower with a small dome mark its Beaux Arts design. A clock was added to the tower in 1923. Inside, a rotunda with steel stairs, marble columns and a stained glass ceiling anchors the public corridors, although many offices have been remodeled. The square also holds a Confederate statue, a firemen's memorial and a statue of Jose Antonio Navarro. The courthouse is recognized for its long role as the seat of county government and for its well-preserved Beaux Arts architecture. It remains in use as a courthouse.","period_of_significance":"1905-1954","architect_builder":"Flanders, James Edward, architect; General Supply and Construction Company, builders","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals/Beaux Arts","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as the county courthouse; the interior has been altered several times, while the exterior has seen few changes.
