It is also a well-preserved example of the private plantation family burial grounds of the North Carolina frontier, from before church cemeteries became common.","narrative":"Dula-Horton Cemetery is a one-acre family burying ground on Dula Hill, a hilltop overlooking the Yadkin River bottomlands in eastern Caldwell County. It holds sixty-eight graves of members of the Dula, Horton and Jones families, laid out in five rows, mostly marked by white marble tablets, with a group of obelisks dating from the 1880s to 1910s. The earliest burial is that of Captain William Dula in 1835. Dula acquired about 1,800 acres along the Yadkin between 1791 and 1804 and became one of the wealthiest men in the Happy Valley. The family house on the hill burned in 1949, leaving the cemetery as the main surviving reminder of his family's five generations there. The cemetery is also a well-preserved example of the plantation family burial grounds common before church graveyards became widespread. The period of significance runs from 1835 to 1947, and descendants still maintain the site.","period_of_significance":"1835-1947","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","B"],"status_note":"Still maintained as a family cemetery, enclosed by a woven wire fence erected around 1990; the last burial took place in 1989.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.455693-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/1/7194/47719401/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/04000941.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000941/516a3d80d1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000941/516a3d80d1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Chris Crookston","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dula-Horton_Cemetery.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Crookston</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dula-Horton_Cemetery.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719401","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dula-Horton_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18148369"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/caldwell-county/dula-horton-cemetery-04000941/"}
