It is also a rare early work by architect J.W. Donohue, one of only two known buildings by him not commissioned by the Springfield Roman Catholic Diocese (Criterion C). It retains integrity of design, materials and workmanship.","narrative":"Lenox High School is a red brick school on a terraced hill above Housatonic Street, built in 1908-1909 and designed by Springfield architect Jonathan William Donohue. Its design mixes Colonial Revival forms with Renaissance Revival detail, including terra cotta ornament, buff brick quoins, a slate gable roof and an open wooden cupola with Ionic colonettes. A rear addition of 1948 by architect Morris W. Maloney added a gymnasium, science laboratory and vocational room. The school educated local students for 89 years, until grades 7 to 12 moved to a new high school in 1966, after which the building housed elementary grades. It is notable for its role in the town's educational history and as an unusual work by Donohue, who mostly designed for the Catholic diocese. In 2002 it was converted to assisted living, with the main corridor, wainscoting, stairs and entrance vestibule preserved.","period_of_significance":"1908-1954","architect_builder":"Donohue, Johnathan William","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival; Italian Renaissance","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Converted in 2002 to an assisted living residence, with the original corridor and classroom layout largely retained.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.04932-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/7942/63794228/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/04000903.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000903/3da45b2ff5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000903/3da45b2ff5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lenox_High_School,_Lenox_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lenox_High_School,_Lenox_MA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100006987","name":"Lenox Village Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/lenox-village-historic-district-100006987/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794228","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Lenox_High_School_building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6523168"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/lenox-high-school-04000903/"}
