It reflects the Rosenwald school-building program and African American education in rural Cass County, where only two of twenty-three Rosenwald schools are known to survive. It is also significant for its architecture.","narrative":"Pleasant Hill School is a small wood-frame schoolhouse built in 1925 in a rural farming community northwest of Linden, Texas. It follows Community School Plan #20, a standardized two-teacher design promoted through the Rosenwald school-building program. The building has a symmetrical front with a projecting gabled bay, two entry doors, white clapboard siding, exposed rafter tails, knee braces, and large multi-pane windows. Inside are two classrooms once divided by a movable partition, plus a third room used as a kitchen and sometimes a classroom. The school cost $3,450, with contributions from the African American community, public funds, and the Rosenwald Fund. It opened with two teachers and about seventy students and closed in 1964 as the county's Black population declined. Only two of twenty-three Rosenwald schools built in Cass County are known to survive. The site also retains a playground and storm shelter. It was listed for its role in education and African American heritage, and for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1925-1954","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late 19th and early 20th Century American Movements: Craftsman","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Owned and maintained by Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and used sporadically as a community center; the building is currently not in use, has a roof leak, termite signs, and boarded-up windows.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:24.087997-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/11/9685/40968511/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/04000891.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000891/07173e5d7c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000891/07173e5d7c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tim Dowd","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pleasant_Hill,_Texas_Rosenwald_School.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Dowd</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pleasant_Hill,_Texas_Rosenwald_School.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968511","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleasant_Hill_School_(Linden,_Texas)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7203875"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/cass-county/pleasant-hill-school-04000891/"}
