Humphries and his wife Molly by an unknown contractor. It has an irregular plan with a Modified L-plan roof and Queen Anne influenced detailing.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a rare, highly intact example of an irregular-plan dwelling with Queen Anne influences, and the only surviving one of its age and type in Edgewood. It also reflects the growth of Edgewood as a railroad-driven agricultural service and shipping center. The Humphries family's role in local business and civic life adds to its local importance.","narrative":"Built about 1893 at 201 South Main Street in Edgewood, Texas, this 1 1/2-story wood frame house was constructed for merchant William H. Humphries, his wife Molly, and their family. An unknown contractor built it with an irregular plan, a steeply pitched Modified L-plan roof, a turret-like dormer, and a porch with turned posts and pierced brackets in a restrained Queen Anne manner. It is the only surviving Queen Anne influenced house of its type in Edgewood and one of few intact examples in Van Zandt County. Original windows, doors, pine woodwork, staircase and interior layout largely remain. A 1975 restoration reopened a side porch, replaced the porch rail and moved the front steps, and adapted rooms for use as a bed and breakfast. The house was listed for its architectural character and its link to Edgewood's late nineteenth-century growth as a railroad shipping and service town. The Humphries family remained active in local commerce and civic life.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1893","architect_builder":"Builder/Owner: Humphries, William H.
