The nominated property also includes a concrete water station.","why_significant":"The station is tied to the twentieth-century growth of Andes and to railroad history in Delaware County, where the line supported dairy farming and tourism. It is also a distinctive, intact example of the standard station type the D&N built. Of the few surviving D&N stations, it is described as the most intact.","narrative":"Built in 1907 on Cabin Hill Road in Andes, this long, low wood-frame railroad station served as the last stop on a three-mile spur linking the hamlet to the Delaware and Northern Railroad's main line. It has a broad hipped roof with overhanging eaves and oversized decorative brackets, mixed board-and-batten and clapboard siding, and diamond-paned windows. A concrete water station on the parcel is also part of the property. The railroad let local dairy farmers ship milk to metropolitan markets and brought tourists to the Catskills. Because the line was built quickly, its stations followed a few standard designs, and this one closely resembles those at Arena, Downsville and Margaretville. Passenger service on the Andes branch ended when it was abandoned in 1925, as roads and automobiles drew away business. The platform, chimney and dormer are gone, and the interior has been opened into a single space, but the exterior remains highly intact. The building is vacant, and the town is restoring it.","period_of_significance":"1907-1925","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"no style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant; the interior is somewhat deteriorated and the town of Andes is in the process of restoring the building.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.803195-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04000872.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000872/45b1092f25-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000872/45b1092f25-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Vonsky87","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andes_Station,_Andes,_NY_1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Vonsky87</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andes_Station,_Andes,_NY_1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317197","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andes_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4754286"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/delaware-county/delaware-and-northern-railroad-station-04000872/"}
