The original log core dates to 1790-1798 and was expanded and embellished around 1870.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be significant under Criterion C as a locally important example of vernacular Italianate design. Its circa 1870 expansion, interior finishes and canted bays reflect the tastes and business success of its owners Andrew and Jennie McFarlane during the county's industrialization. It is compared with other Italianate farmhouses in western Pennsylvania.","narrative":"Built in 1790-1798 as a hewn log dwelling by William Larimer Sr. on a 280-acre farm in North Huntingdon Township, the house was expanded around 1870 by Andrew Lewis McFarlane and his wife Jennie. The couple added a two-and-a-half-story rear wing, three canted bays, cedar cladding and cornerboards, and Italianate details including elongated windows with decorative hoods, bracketed doorways and an elaborate main door surround. Inside, the 1870 work includes pressed metal ceilings, an octagonal newel post stair, and carved marble and painted slate fireplaces, while the original corner fireplaces and six-paneled second floor doors survive from the log period. The house is regarded as a locally significant example of vernacular Italianate design. Its alterations reflect the prosperity McFarlane gained from farming and from stock in coal and oil companies during the county's industrial growth. Surrounding farmland was later subdivided along the US Route 30 corridor, leaving the house on a much smaller lot.","period_of_significance":"circa 1870","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The house remains largely intact with minor sympathetic alterations; a wrap-around porch was erected in 1989.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:10:27.006814-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/04000807.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000807/ff00bdf4b7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000807/ff00bdf4b7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Matthew Newberg","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Larimer,_Sr_House-0160.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew Newberg</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Larimer,_Sr_House-0160.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71996814","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_and_Jennie_McFarlane_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4759018"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/westmoreland-county/mcfarlane-andrew-and-jennie-house-04000807/"}
