It is presented as a surviving example of a regional type of village Sunday school in northern Montgomery County.","narrative":"Built in 1891 of brick on a stone foundation, the Sanatoga Union Sunday School is a one-and-one-half-story gable-front building on East High Street with an open bell tower over the front of its roof. Its three-bay main façade has arched windows, a double wooden door with an arched transom, and a date stone above the central window. Inside, a large open area holds original wooden benches and children's chairs, and a balcony added in the 1930s served the youngest children. The community built it by volunteer labor after a Sunday school that had begun in 1865 in the local schoolhouse outgrew that space. Its 112 attendees marched to the new chapel on May 10, 1891. The building is valued for its record of community religious education and for its vernacular Late Victorian gable-end design. In 1991 it was donated to the Lower Pottsgrove Historical Society, which still uses it.","period_of_significance":"1891-1954","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"In use by the Lower Pottsgrove Historical Society as a meeting place, records facility and display center, and opened to the public for fundraising events.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:10:27.343282-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/04000805.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000805/b7749eb541-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000805/b7749eb541-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sanatoga_Union_Sunday_School.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sanatoga_Union_Sunday_School.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71996339","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanatoga_Union_Sunday_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7415539"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/montgomery-county/sanatoga-union-sunday-school-04000805/"}
