It served School District 1 until 1942 and is the only intact schoolhouse remaining in Gallatin. It also retains a high degree of integrity despite c. 1900 modifications.","narrative":"Built around 1860, this one-room schoolhouse sits on a 4.2-acre lot along County Route 8 in the town of Gallatin, about a mile east of the remains of Snyderville, once called Weaver Hollow. It is a small clapboard building on a fieldstone foundation, with a gable roof, a small bell tower, deep eaves and a sawn cornice. Inside, a cloak room leads to a single schoolroom with wainscoting, remnants of plaster walls and blackboards. A c. 1900 remodeling replaced two east windows with a bank of four larger ones and updated the interior. The land was sold in February 1860 to the acting trustee of School District 1, and the school operated until 1942, with 25 to 40 students attending annually in surviving records. It is the only intact schoolhouse left in Gallatin and a representative example of rural school architecture of its era. It is in fair condition and currently vacant, with its windows boarded up.","period_of_significance":"c. 1860 - 1942","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Victorian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"In fair condition and not in use; windows are boarded up to protect against vandalism.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.113477-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04000754.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000754/ba59218ba5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000754/ba59218ba5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"WindingRoad","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Snyderville_Schoolhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">WindingRoad</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Snyderville_Schoolhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317073","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snyderville_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7548924"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/columbia-county/snyderville-schoolhouse-04000754/"}
