It is a single dwelling with a carriage barn, garden studio and stone retaining wall.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be a well-preserved example of a modest pre-Revolutionary, late Georgian vernacular dwelling of the type built by English and Irish settlers in the Hudson Valley. It retains its original plan, hewn framing, plaster and wrought-iron hardware. It is also tied to the McDowell family, who came to the area after the 1729 George and Anne voyage.","narrative":"Built around 1770 on Lake Road in New Windsor, this small farmhouse is a one-and-one-half-story \"half-house\" with a one-story kitchen wing. Its heavy hewn post-and-beam frame is clapboarded, with brick nogging, a fieldstone foundation and a massive center chimney. Inside, the original plan survives: a side hall, parlor, small bedroom and keeping room gathered around the chimney, with an enclosed stair to a finished half-story. Batten doors with hand-wrought iron hardware and mantel moldings in the late Georgian vernacular remain. A three-sided bay window was likely added about 1860. The house is tied to the McDowell family, Irish settlers who survived the 1729 voyage of the George and Anne and settled in the Little Britain area. A later tenant, weaver James Alexander, lived there in the early nineteenth century. The property also includes a c. 1870 carriage barn, a garden studio and a stone retaining wall. It was listed for its architecture and its link to early settlement.","period_of_significance":"c. 1770-1870","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Georgian vernacular","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling; the original plan and most original finishes survive, and the kitchen wing still serves as a kitchen.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.063596-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04000753.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000753/a7cf38083b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000753/a7cf38083b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_McDowell_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_McDowell_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320686","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_McDowell_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7792295"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/mcdowell-thomas-house-04000753/"}
