Nine were built in Ashe County, and Elkland's cost $4,090.95. The building has a one-and-a-half-story gabled center section, lower shed wings, weatherboard siding, a standing seam metal roof and six dormers on each side. Inside, chestnut scissor trusses carry the roof, and a stage with flanking dressing rooms sits at one end, with original bleachers in a side shed. The gym hosted high school basketball, school fund-raising plays and community meetings. It served children and residents until the early 1980s, and the original school building beside it has been demolished. Its integrity is described as excellent, with repairs made in kind. Its listed period of significance runs from about 1934 to 1954, and it now serves as a woodshop and storage building.","period_of_significance":"c. 1934 - 1954","architect_builder":"N.C.
