It also cites its churches, cemetery, library/museum and soldiers' monument, and its link to local industry and the North Branch Canal.","narrative":"Athens Historic District lies along South Main Street in the Borough of Athens, on a peninsula between the Chemung and Susquehanna Rivers in northeastern Pennsylvania. Its long lots were laid out by the Connecticut Susquehanna Company in 1786 and run from one river to the other. The district holds 98 contributing resources, mostly houses built between 1801 and about 1935. Its Greek Revival houses date largely from 1825 to 1860, and the brick house at 615 South Main Street, built between 1841 and 1843 with a full-height Ionic porch, is regarded as the most high-style example. Italianate and Gothic Revival residences also appear, including 617 South Main Street, built in 1851 for Col. Charles F. Welles. Later Queen Anne houses reflect prosperity from iron works and the North Branch Canal. The district also includes churches, a cemetery, the Spalding Memorial Library and Tioga Point Museum from 1897, and the Protection of the Flag Monument from 1902.","period_of_significance":"1801 circa 1935","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne, Greek Revival, Italianate, Classical Revival","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"The district is described as having witnessed very few changes over time and retaining its character as a residential neighborhood.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:35.996704-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/04000612.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000612/81f719c9a5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000612/81f719c9a5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trinity_Episcopal_Church_Athens_PA_Nov_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trinity_Episcopal_Church_Athens_PA_Nov_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71994547","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athens_Historic_District_(Athens,_Pennsylvania)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4813497"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/bradford-county/athens-historic-district-04000612/"}
