It shows both typical I-house features and distinctive sawnwork and interior woodwork by local builder Fabe Morris. The retained log section documents how a farmhouse changed through the mid to late nineteenth century.","narrative":"Set on a small hill in the Reems Creek valley near Weaverville, this farmhouse grew in two stages. John Brigman likely built the two-room, half-dovetail log house around 1845, when his family was young. Around 1880, his son-in-law Joseph B. Chambers added a two-story I-house to the front to make room for a growing household of seven children. The addition is credited to Fabe Morris, a local carpenter who married one of Chambers' daughters. Its two-tiered front porch has sawn brackets and an ornate balustrade, and the interior has beaded-board wainscot, fluted casings and decorative mantels in a simplified Queen Anne manner. The log section was later raised to a full second story and extended with rear additions. The land was once several hundred acres but was gradually divided. In 1999 the house was sold for salvage and partly dismantled before a preservation group acquired it and a new owner renovated it. It was listed for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1880","architect_builder":"Morris, Fabe","architectural_style":"Other: I-house (with Queen Anne influences)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Rescued from salvage and planned demolition in 1999 and then renovated; the current function is listed as hotel.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.140432-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/37/7191/47719137/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/04000573.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000573/9a30f29826-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000573/9a30f29826-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"rossograph","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brigman-Chambers_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">rossograph</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brigman-Chambers_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719137","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigman-Chambers_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17986081"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/buncombe-county/brigman-chambers-house-04000573/"}
