It sits on 2 acres beside King's Creek and includes a well, a carriage house and a smokehouse.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is significant under Criterion C as an example of an 18th-century plantation residence in Princess Anne County. It retains much original fabric, including Flemish bond brickwork, heart pine floors, mantels and pegged construction. It is the only one of three houses Isaac Murray built for his sons that survives, along with Isaac's own house.","narrative":"Begun in 1791 and finished in 1794, this brick house on King's Creek in Virginia Beach was built by Isaac Murray for his son Thomas. The Murray family farmed flax commercially on the surrounding land, and the house is one of three Isaac built for his sons. Only this one and Isaac's own house survive. The walls are solid handmade brick, 18 inches thick, laid in Flemish bond, under a gambrel roof with five dormers on each side. Inside, a center hall plan, heart pine floors, pegged mantels, a built-in cupboard and an English basement kitchen with its original fireplace remain. The property stayed in the Murray family until the early 1950s, when a developer subdivided the farmland. John and Katie Tucker then bought the house, saved it from demolition and restored it. The house was listed for its architecture, as a well-preserved example of an 18th-century plantation residence in the former Princess Anne County. It remains a private home.","period_of_significance":"1791-1794","architect_builder":"Murray, Isaac","architectural_style":"COLONIAL: Dutch Colonial","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single-family dwelling. Restored over several decades, with the carriage house and smokehouse rebuilt in the late 1980s on original foundation sites.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.744906-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/71/6839/41683971/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/04000482.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000482/33fa927b0f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000482/33fa927b0f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:THOMAS_MURRAY_HOUSE,_VIRGINIA_BEACH,_VA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683971","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Murray_House_(Virginia_Beach,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7792638"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/virginia-beach/murray-thomas-house-04000482/"}
