It has operated continuously as a tourist and guest facility since 1930.","narrative":"Tapoco Lodge is a small resort complex in a valley formed by the Yellowhammer Branch of the Cheoah River in Graham County, North Carolina. Alcoa built the two-and-one-half-story brick Colonial Revival lodge in 1930 to house employees and guests visiting the nearby Tapoco hydroelectric project. A former store and post office, now the dining hall, was joined to the lodge by the late 1930s. Seven frame guest cottages followed around 1935, and a guard house, storage buildings, a chlorinator house and a quonset-style theater with Art Moderne influence were added around 1950 to 1952. Three gazebos and two tennis courts from 1999 are counted as non-contributing. The district was listed for its part in early automobile tourism in western North Carolina, which grew as US 129 was built, and for its architecture as a representative early 20th century hotel complex. Its period of significance runs from 1930 to 1953, and the lodge has operated continuously for guests.","period_of_significance":"1930-1953","architect_builder":"BUILDER: Tapoco, Inc.","architectural_style":"Late 19th & Early 20th Century Revivals/Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Has operated continuously as a tourist and guest facility since 1930; historic and current functions are both hotel, theater, garage and related uses.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.469192-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/47/7178/47717847/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/04000465.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000465/91ca3cf646-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000465/91ca3cf646-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"John Foxe","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TapocoLodge.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Foxe</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TapocoLodge.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717847","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapoco_Lodge_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18158625"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/graham-county/tapoco-lodge-historic-district-04000465/"}
