It retains a high level of integrity with only minor alterations, mostly inside. Its details reflect the transition between Greek Revival and Italianate styles.","narrative":"Located at 515 County Road in Wilmington, Illinois, this wood-frame house on a cut limestone foundation was built in two phases between about 1864 and 1869. It follows the Upright-and-Wing form, with a two-story gable-front section joined to a lower side wing. A full-height angled bay and a wide band of trim under the eaves reflect Greek Revival influence, while paired brackets, a glazed-panel door and the bay window reflect Italianate taste. The brackets carry egg-shaped finials, which earned it the local nickname the Egg House. William McGinnis bought the lot in 1864 and built the house. Later owners included Wilmington's first mayor, John H. Daniels, and then the Small and Towle families, for whom it is named. A kitchen and bath added in the 1920s were the largest change. The house is recognized as the most intact local example of this popular nineteenth-century housing type.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1864-ca. 1869","architect_builder":"Unknown (the narrative says the house was built by William McGinnis)","architectural_style":"Other: Upright and Wing, with Greek Revival and Italianate detailing","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition with a high level of historic integrity; still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.739231-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/29/8943/28894329/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/04000419.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000419/96dceb6b23-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000419/96dceb6b23-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"QuartierLatin1968","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Small-Towle_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">QuartierLatin1968</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Small-Towle_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894329","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small%E2%80%93Towle_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7543725"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/will-county/small-towle-house-04000419/"}
