It sits on a cut-stone foundation on its original small lot.","why_significant":"The school is an intact, representative example of a one-room rural schoolhouse and is tied to the history of education in the town of Coventry. It shows the form, materials and interior divisions (vestibule and single classroom) common to rural New York schools. It is one of the two best-preserved schools surviving in the town.","narrative":"Built in 1900 on the west side of NY 235 in the hamlet of Coventry, this one-room schoolhouse served District 4, one of the largest school districts in the town. It is a one-and-one-half story wood-frame building with clapboard siding, a broad gable roof, a cut-stone foundation and a projecting entrance portico with patterned shingles and a vergeboard. Inside, a vestibule leads to a single large classroom finished entirely in beaded board, with hardwood floors and a stove pipe enclosure; a rear wing holds a coal bin. The school replaced an earlier building put up in 1853 by local carpenter Lemuel Lewis. It was recognized as an intact, representative example of a rural New York common school and for its link to the town's educational history. Only a few schoolhouses survive in Coventry, and this one and the District 2 school are the best preserved. The building has changed very little since it was constructed.","period_of_significance":"1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"no style","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Described as virtually unchanged since construction despite some deterioration of materials; the open bell tower has been removed and original blackboards and privies are gone. Current function is listed as school.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.938217-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04000353.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316862","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_School_4_(Coventry,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5283364"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chenango-county/district-school-4-04000353/"}
