It has a 1964 rear wing for meeting space.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a distinctive and highly intact example of late nineteenth-century religious architecture in Margaretville. Its eclectic late Victorian exterior, with an engaged corner tower and belfry, is paired with an intact auditorium-plan interior that reflects contemporary Protestant trends. Its design resembles plans by architect Benjamin D. Price, and it retains almost complete integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1894 on Orchard Avenue in Margaretville, Delaware County, this one-story wood-frame church served a Presbyterian congregation organized in 1891. Its members included newcomers and families who transferred from the New Kingston Presbyterian Church. The exterior combines clapboard and fish-scale shingles, lancet-arched windows, scroll-sawn vergeboards and brackets, and an engaged corner tower topped by a belfry with pinnacles. Inside, a single open auditorium has curved pews, corner entrances, beaded-board walls and a raised platform, along with original Eastlake-style furniture. This layout reflects the revivalist-influenced auditorium plan popular in Protestant churches of the period. The builder is unknown, but the design closely resembles Plan Number 36 in architect Benjamin D. Price's 1885 catalogue, and plans may have been bought from his office. A 1964 rear wing added meeting space, yet the building remains almost entirely intact and is regarded as an important local landmark.","period_of_significance":"1894","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Apart from the 1964 rear addition and a few cosmetic interior changes such as new lights and carpeting, the church is described as completely intact to its construction period. Its current function is still religious.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.631888-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04000348.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000348/b2ed03323e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000348/b2ed03323e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Margaretville,_NY,_Presbyterian_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Margaretville,_NY,_Presbyterian_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317209","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Presbyterian_Church_of_Margaretville","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453693"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/delaware-county/first-presbyterian-church-of-margaretville-04000348/"}
