Ludwig for winemaker Isaac De Turk. It is 76 feet in diameter and now sits in a city park.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the barn is significant under Criterion C (Architecture) as one of very few nineteenth-century round or polygonal barns left in Northern California. It is one of two such barns in Sonoma County and appears to be the only remaining round barn in California. A 1981 letter from the State Historic Preservation Officer called it one of the last of its type in California and probably in the western United States.","narrative":"Built in 1891, this two-story round barn at 819 Donahue Street in Santa Rosa was commissioned by winemaker Isaac De Turk to house his champion trotting horses. Builder Thomas J. Ludwig framed it with posts and beams, clad it in redwood shiplap siding, and topped it with a conical shingled roof, a vented cupola and a copper weathervane of a trotting horse. The barn measures 76 feet across, with radiating stalls around the ground floor and an open center rising to a hayloft. After De Turk died in 1896 it passed through several owners and served as the city corporation yard from 1910 to 1984. The city bought it back in 1996, repaired the exterior in 1998 and turned the site into a park. It is considered significant as an architectural rarity: one of a handful of nineteenth-century round or polygonal barns remaining in Northern California, and possibly the only true round barn left in the state. Its interior remains in poor condition.","period_of_significance":"1891","architect_builder":"Ludwig, Thomas J. (builder)","architectural_style":"OTHER: Round Barn","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed current function is vacant/not in use. The city repaired the roof and exterior in 1998, but the interior shows dampness, temporary posts and braces support the hayloft, and much interior siding has been removed.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.766666-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/04000334.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000334/146ef3884b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000334/146ef3884b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:De_Turk_Round_Barn,_819_Donahue_St.,_Santa_Rosa,_CA_6-12-2010_8-05-53_PM.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:De_Turk_Round_Barn,_819_Donahue_St.,_Santa_Rosa,_CA_6-12-2010_8-05-53_PM.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123862056","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Turk_Round_Barn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5244775"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/sonoma-county/de-turk-round-barn-04000334/"}
