It shows the design, craftsmanship and natural materials of the period and retains a high degree of integrity. It was designed and built by John A. Jergenson.","narrative":"Built in 1914 in Pasadena's Tract No. 1945, this one-and-one-half-story airplane bungalow sits mid-block on North Chester Avenue within the Bungalow Heaven local landmark district. John A. Jergenson designed and built it and lived there with his wife Jennie. The wood-framed house rests on a river stone foundation and has low-pitched gables, exposed rafter tails, wide open eaves, cedar shingle siding with a stucco wainscot, and bands of windows on the upper story. A broad corner porch is carried on four massive tapered stone piers, and extended beams over the driveway form a pergola. Inside, a brick fireplace with built-in bookshelves, Douglas fir trim and oak floors survive. A detached 1914 garage and a later patio with pergola are non-contributing. The house was listed for its architecture, as an excellent local example of Pasadena's Arts and Crafts residential design, with natural materials, horizontal massing and a porch that links interior and exterior space.","period_of_significance":"1914","architect_builder":"Jergenson, John A.","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th American Movements/Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition with a high degree of integrity; still used as a single-family dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.764134-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/04000326.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000326/a586ceb480-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000326/a586ceb480-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"TheCatalyst31","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_1141_North_Chester_Avenue.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">TheCatalyst31</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_1141_North_Chester_Avenue.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123857496","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_1141_North_Chester_Avenue","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17194296"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/house-at-1141-north-chester-avenue-04000326/"}
