It was designed by prominent architect Sylvanus Marston and was the first house built in its tract. It keeps its high-pitched roof, prominent chimneys, banded multi-paned windows, stucco walls and interior Arts and Crafts detailing.","narrative":"Set far back on an elevated double lot at the southern entrance to Pasadena's Arroyo Park Tract, this two-story house was designed by architect Sylvanus Marston and built in 1913 by John H. Simpson for the Arroyo Park Corporation. It was the first house in the tract and appears to have been meant to set the standard for the development. Its English-influenced Arts and Crafts character shows in a steep gable-on-hip roof with varied heights, prominent chimneys, bands of multi-paned windows, stucco walls and a Tudor-inspired entry portico. Inside, beamed ceilings, paneled wainscoting, mahogany, cedar and Douglas fir woodwork, Inglenook benches and Batchelder tile hearths reflect the craftsmanship of the period. Its first private owner, in 1915, was Henry Newby, a longtime bank president. The grounds include a rose garden with a pergola bench, a 1915 garage and a 1967 pool. The house is valued as an excellent, well-preserved example of Pasadena Arts and Crafts residential design.","period_of_significance":"1913","architect_builder":"Marston, Sylvanus (architect); John H.
