It was built in 1829 and was long known as the Barre Center Tavern.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is a rare surviving brick Federal tavern or hotel in Orleans County, on an early north-south route to Oak Orchard Harbor. It is considered unusually well built, with fine craftsmanship and costly materials. Its largely intact floor plan shows how a commercial building became a residence after the Civil War.","narrative":"Built in 1829 in the hamlet of Barre Center, this two-story brick building on Oak Orchard Road served as a tavern and hotel along an early route linking Batavia with Oak Orchard Harbor on Lake Ontario. Stephen Skinner, who bought the land from the Holland Land Company, had it erected, and a date of 1829 is carved in a second-story lintel. The five-bay Flemish bond front has tooled limestone trim, a stone-arched doorway and original wood fans in the gables. Inside, a large square public room, a steep enclosed stair and original king-post roof trusses reveal its commercial origins. Later owners ran it as Rowlandson's Hotel before Relly Tinkham bought it in 1865 and converted it to a residence, adding an Italianate bracketed cornice. Although deteriorated and undergoing repairs, it keeps much original plaster, trim and sash. It was listed for its architecture, as a well-built and rare local example of a Federal tavern building.","period_of_significance":"1829-ca 1885","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal; Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as deteriorated but structurally stabilized with temporary shoring and undergoing repairs; used as a residence.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.485258-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04000291.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000291/c117a63f41-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000291/c117a63f41-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Skinner-Tinkham_House,_Barre_Center,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Skinner-Tinkham_House,_Barre_Center,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320819","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skinner-Tinkham_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7535495"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orleans-county/skinner-tinkham-house-04000291/"}
