It was built in 1838-40 for Peter Yawger on a roughly 7-acre lot.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding, virtually intact example of high-style Greek Revival domestic architecture in the Finger Lakes region. Its pedimented porticoes, wide center hall, raised basement and abundant classical interior detail embody the style, and its form emulates Jefferson's Monticello. Association with Peter Yawger, a local and state politician, was noted but judged insufficient for criterion B.","narrative":"Overlooking Cayuga Lake from a knoll north of Union Springs, this brick mansion was built in 1838-40 for Peter Yawger, a plaster supplier who also served in the New York State Assembly, as Cayuga County sheriff and as a delegate to the 1846 State Constitutional Convention. The one and one-half story, gable-roofed house has five-bay front and rear facades, each with a massive pedimented portico; the front portico has four fluted Ionic columns. A raised stone foundation holds a mostly finished basement, and a kitchen wing and reconstructed frame carriage house extend to the south. Inside, a wide center hall, parlors, and a dining room survive with fireplaces, overmantels, rosette-ornamented cove moldings and carved door and window trim. The nomination describes the house as one of the finest and most intact Greek Revival homes in the region and notes its resemblance to Jefferson's Monticello in siting, massing and the separation of service spaces from public rooms. About seven acres remain of Yawger's former holdings.","period_of_significance":"1838-40","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Early 19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single-family dwelling; renovations were carried out around 1999-2002, and the carriage house and porticoes were reconstructed from historic photos.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.793047-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04000283.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000283/c2d0039c75-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000283/c2d0039c75-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peter_Yawger_House_21_03_48_465000.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peter_Yawger_House_21_03_48_465000.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316749","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Yawger_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7177821"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cayuga-county/yawger-peter-house-04000283/"}
