It incorporates a one-story, two-room dwelling built in 1861 by T. W. Folts.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C for architecture as a good example of a small vernacular house expanded in the late nineteenth century to reflect larger dwelling sizes and contemporary tastes. It has kept its essential 1888 form, with later rear additions in 1931 and 1963. It is also tied to local figures, including a Goliad Massacre survivor and two county clerks.","narrative":"This two-story frame house at 236 Preston Street in Columbus, Texas, grew in stages. Its oldest part is a two-room, one-story dwelling built by T. W. Folts in 1861, later home to Dillard Cooper, a survivor of the 1836 Goliad Massacre. In 1888 the local builders Andrew Wirtz and Sons added a two-story I-plan house for Jesse and Abbie Harrison, folding the earlier dwelling into a rear ell. Full-length galleries, jigsawn scrollwork, shutters and a carved front door with sidelights and a transom mark the street front. Inside, the stairway is Texas redheart pine, and brick fireplaces and tongue-and-groove floors remain. Jesse Harrison served as District Clerk and County Clerk, and later owner John Hastedt also became County Clerk. A sleeping porch was added in 1931, and a 1963 restoration brought a garage and updated systems. The house keeps its 1888 form and was listed for its architecture at the local level.","period_of_significance":"1861-1888","architect_builder":"Folts, T.
