It also reflects the economic success of a rural town around 1900 and the Langford and Hay families, pioneer settlers of Bandera with ties to Lyman Wight's Mormon colony. It is listed under Criterion A in Community Planning and Development at the local level.","narrative":"Two blocks east of the courthouse square in Bandera, this wood-frame house began in 1890-91 as a one-story, L-plan home of three rooms and a kitchen. In 1915 the family added a dining room and a second floor with three bedrooms, a sleeping porch and a bathroom, turning it into a two-story residence with Colonial Revival and Shingle touches. Later changes in 1937 and 1940 were minor. A limestone foundation and chimney came from rock quarried on Langford land along the Medina River. A smokehouse with buggy shed, a garage and engine shed, a well and a windmill survive on the lot. Benjamin Franklin Langford Jr. and Mary Hay Langford belonged to families that came to Bandera with Lyman Wight's Mormon colony. The house was listed under Criterion A for community planning and development, as an intact record of how a small Texas town household lived and adapted between 1890 and 1953.","period_of_significance":"1890-1953","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mixed: vernacular center passage house with Colonial Revival, Shingle and Craftsman elements","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"The house is still used as a single dwelling. It has been recently repainted and rewired, the windmill and well still work, and the original furnishings are kept intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:24.204514-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/9710/40971028/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/04000229.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000229/2c5385682c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000229/2c5385682c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:B.F._Langford_Jr._and_Mary_Hay_House_Bandera_Wiki_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:B.F._Langford_Jr._and_Mary_Hay_House_Bandera_Wiki_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971028","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001183"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/bandera-county/langford-b-f-jr-and-mary-hay-house-04000229/"}
