It contains 49 resources, mostly brick commercial buildings of the mid-to-late nineteenth century.","why_significant":"The district is the intact historic commercial core of Brockport, a village that grew where the Erie Canal crossed the early north-south Lake Road. Its nearly continuous rows of Victorian-era commercial buildings keep a high level of integrity of design, materials and craftsmanship, along with setting and location. The canal lift bridge and tower add to its canal-era character.","narrative":"Brockport's Main Street Historic District preserves the commercial heart of a village of about 8,100 people in western Monroe County. The ten-acre district runs along Main Street from the Erie Canal, takes in the western half of Market Street and includes one property on King Street. Most of its buildings are attached brick or stone structures in the Italianate manner, built over the latter three quarters of the nineteenth century. They typically have storefronts below, offices on the second floor and apartments or storage above. Large display windows, recessed entrances, cast-iron or stone piers and ornamented cornices give the rows a cohesive look. The district also holds a 1940 post office, a large church and a 1915 steel lift bridge with a 1913 concrete tower on the canal. The village grew where the Erie Canal crossed Lake Road, and the canal was extended to Brockport in 1823. The upper floors in particular retain a high level of historic integrity.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Lift bridge fabricated by the Penn Bridge Company of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania; tower built by the McMylar Interstate Company of Cleveland, Ohio","architectural_style":"Greek Revival, Gothic, Italianate, Classical Revival, Italian Renaissance, Moderne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Buildings remain in commercial use, plus a post office and a church. Some have modernized storefronts or later facade sheathing, and a local preservation board subsidizes facade restoration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:54.117667-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04000227.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000227/7180086d95-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000227/7180086d95-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Main_Street_Historic_District_Brockport_NY_Oct_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Main_Street_Historic_District_Brockport_NY_Oct_09.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"14000860","name":"New York State Barge Canal","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-state-barge-canal-14000860/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318872","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Street_Historic_District_(Brockport,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6736125"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/main-street-historic-district-04000227/"}
