Denton Street in Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas, built 1898-1901 for E.P. and Alice Bomar, with a two-story brick carriage house added in 1903.","why_significant":"The house is presented as one of the best unaltered examples of Queen Anne style architecture in Gainesville, in a Free Classic interpretation designed by local architect John G. Garrett. It is also tied to E.P. Bomar, whose cottonseed oil and real estate businesses contributed to Gainesville's commerce and growth over 39 years.","narrative":"Built between 1898 and 1901, this two-story brick and stone house at 417 S. Denton Street in Gainesville was designed by local architect John G. Garrett for cottonseed oil businessman E.P. Bomar and his wife Alice. It is a Free Classic interpretation of Queen Anne style, combining an asymmetrical plan, steep gables and a hipped roof with Ionic columns, pediments and a wraparound porch with an elaborate tile floor. Materials include Kansas brick, Mineral Wells sandstone and limestone, with interior stenciling, carved staircase, catalogue-ordered mantels and pocket doors. A carriage house built in 1903 by Garrett and Snelling stands at the rear corner of the lot. The only major change came in 1910, when Bomar extended the dining room. The house is considered one of the best unaltered Queen Anne examples in the city, and it is also linked to Bomar's role in Gainesville's commercial growth. It remains a private single-family home.","period_of_significance":"1898-1901","architect_builder":"Garrett, John G., architect; Garrett and Snelling, Gainesville, Texas, builders","architectural_style":"LATE VICTORIAN/Queen Anne (Free Classic interpretation)","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the form says the house is virtually intact from its 1910 alteration to the original design.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.436603-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/81/9715/40971581/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/04000099.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000099/35d6c3e44f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000099/35d6c3e44f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Michael Barera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gainesville_June_2017_29_(E.P._and_Alice_Bomar_House).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Barera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gainesville_June_2017_29_(E.P._and_Alice_Bomar_House).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971581","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107319184"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/cooke-county/bomar-e-p-and-alice-house-04000099/"}
