It was built in 1845 as Stover's Store by stonemason John M. Fry.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it served as the village's first and long-running country store, tied to Stover's Mill and the milling and farming economy, for more than a hundred years. It is also described as the only surviving unaltered stone store/house in Fauquier County, retaining its original form, materials and setting.","narrative":"Built in 1845 for Charles Stover, this gable-fronted stone store with living quarters stands at a crossroads in Little Georgetown, Fauquier County. Stonemason John M. Fry laid the walls of quarried Bull Run Mountain rock, an unusual choice in a county where stores were usually frame or brick. The building has three bays, a wood-shingled roof, a full cellar and a two-room garret. Inside, a rear heated room served as family quarters while the front held merchandise. Pencilled names of Union soldiers from 1862 and painted initials from 1891 survive on the garret walls. The store supplied farmers and travelers on the Thoroughfare Gap Road and sold Stover flour from the nearby mill. It operated as a general store for over a century and was later known as Brawner's and Heflin's Store. It is described as the only unaltered stone store/house in the county, and a recent restoration removed a later lean-to. Its listing rests on its commercial role and its architecture. The property is now vacant.","period_of_significance":"1845-1890, 1895-1899, 1899-1953","architect_builder":"John M.
