It includes buildings from the mid-18th century to the late 1950s.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the district is significant under Criteria A and C for architecture, transportation and commerce. It traces Scottsville's growth from a river landing and county seat through the James River and Kanawha Canal era. A long economic lull after the 1880s left much of its historic character intact.","narrative":"Scottsville's historic district follows the horseshoe bend of the James River in Albemarle County and climbs the town's hills and bluffs. An earlier 1976 listing covered 53 of the oldest or most significant buildings. This updated nomination adds historic buildings missed then, seven twentieth-century properties on Page Street, and six large estates around the town: Belle Haven, Cliffside, Chester, Oakwood, Mount Walla and Riverview. The inventory totals 215 resources, 153 of them contributing buildings. Styles range from the 1732 Fore House, with few stylistic details, through Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne to Colonial Revival and Craftsman. Scottsville served as a river landing and county seat, and the James River and Kanawha Canal opened through it in 1840. General Sheridan's forces burned much of the town in 1865. After the canal gave way to the railroad in the 1880s, a long economic lull helped preserve much of the district's character. The period of significance runs from 1732 to 1953.","period_of_significance":"1732 to 1953","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mixed: Federal, Georgian, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Prairie School, Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Mixed continuing use: dwellings, shops, a museum and bed and breakfast inns; a former high school now houses apartments for the elderly and disabled.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.536889-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/89/6793/41679389/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/04000034.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000034/9e32d16600-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000034/9e32d16600-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"Nannette Turner from Virginia Beach Va, USA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Victory_Hall_(3497896583).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nannette Turner from Virginia Beach Va, USA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Victory_Hall_(3497896583).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"07001236","name":"Southern Albemarle Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/southern-albemarle-rural-historic-district-07001236/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679389","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottsville_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713182"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/albemarle-county/scottsville-historic-district-boundary-increase-04000034/"}
