It was moved about one mile to its current site on West South Street in 1955.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is an intact example of modest vernacular Gothic Revival church architecture of the late nineteenth century. It is described as the earliest surviving Gothic Revival ecclesiastical building in Anaheim that retains enough integrity to convey its significance. Although the 1955 move cost it integrity of location and setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association remain.","narrative":"Built in 1876 for a congregation founded three years earlier, this small wood-frame church in Anaheim, California, is now known as the Chapel. It has a rectangular plan, a gable-front roof, white-painted drop siding and a central bell tower topped by a bellcast pyramidal roof. Gothic arch entries and double-lancet windows provide the only ornament. The interior features redwood pews, paneled walls and arched redwood trusses. Carpenter C.P. McKinney, who had earlier built the town's Presbyterian church, is thought to have been the builder, and the design reflects collaboration between a building committee and a builder. The church was moved about one mile in 1955, when the congregation relocated, and it continues in use beside a parish hall and a 1964 A-frame church. It was listed for its architecture, as the earliest surviving Gothic Revival church in Anaheim that retains enough integrity to show its original character, despite the loss of its original setting.","period_of_significance":"1876","architect_builder":"McKinney, C.P.","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a chapel on a church campus that also has a 1955 parish hall and a 1964 A-frame church.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.827042-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/04000017.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000017/ddd7cb5e99-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04000017/ddd7cb5e99-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cbl62","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Michael%27s_Episcopal_Church_(Anaheim,_California).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cbl62</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Michael%27s_Episcopal_Church_(Anaheim,_California).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860352","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Michael%27s_Episcopal_Church_(Anaheim,_California)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7590691"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/orange-county/st-michaels-episcopal-church-04000017/"}
