Buildings date from about 1880 to 1955 and cover roughly 17 streets.","why_significant":"The district shows how North Danville grew from the 1870s as a separate mill town, driven by Riverside Cotton Mills, into a mix of leaders' large homes, mill-worker housing and commercial buildings. It keeps a high degree of architectural integrity, with a wide range of Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Bungalow and Folk Victorian buildings. The form counts 426 contributing and 68 noncontributing resources.","narrative":"North Danville is a neighborhood of dwellings, shops and churches on the north bank of the Dan River in Danville, Virginia. It began to develop in the 1870s, was incorporated as a town in 1877, and was annexed to Danville in 1896. The opening of Riverside Cotton Mills in 1882 drew growth: prominent citizens built large houses along North Main Street, while modest frame homes for mill hands and other workers filled the side streets, including gabled ell houses, hall-and-parlor dwellings, duplexes and rows of shotgun houses. Three blocks of two-story brick commercial buildings line the southern end of North Main Street. Builder Thomas B. Fitzgerald constructed many early houses, along with the Gothic-style Calvary United Methodist Church of 1886. Buildings date from about 1880 to 1955 and show Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival and Bungalow styles. Most of the 398 primary buildings contribute to the district's character, and it retains a high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Thomas B.
