The 1929 Colonial Revival remodeling by architect Stuart Edmonds is also part of its period of significance. It is locally significant in architecture under Criterion C.","narrative":"Fair Mount is a stuccoed stone house on a 2.3-acre lot along Fairmont Avenue in northern Winchester, Virginia. Built for merchant Joseph Tidball by local carpenter Lewis Barnett, it was complete by 1809, when it appeared on a regional map. The five-bay, hip-roofed main block and flanking one-and-one-half-story wings give it a Late Georgian profile, while the interior mantels, cornices and doorways reflect the Federal style and the influence of the Adam brothers. Its four-room plan with a lateral stair is uncommon and has been identified in only two other period houses in the city. In 1929 the house was remodeled in the Colonial Revival style, adding a rear portico, a sleeping porch, formal gardens and a garage, while keeping much original fabric. The property has passed through related families since 1836. It was listed for its architectural quality and its integrity as a transitional Georgian-to-Federal dwelling.","period_of_significance":"1809-1929","architect_builder":"Lewis Barnett/builder (1809); Stuart Edmonds/architect (1929)","architectural_style":"Colonial: Georgian; Early Republic: Federal; Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently in use as a single dwelling with a secondary structure (garage); described as well preserved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.336167-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/6841/41684138/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/03001431.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03001431/6e5ed22bb6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03001431/6e5ed22bb6-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Joel Bradshaw","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fair_Mount,_Winchester,_Virginia.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Joel Bradshaw</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fair_Mount,_Winchester,_Virginia.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"80004318","name":"Winchester Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/winchester-historic-district-80004318/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41684138","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_Mount","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16891207"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/winchester/fair-mount-03001431/"}
