It has two stories, three bays, a side-hall plan, a raised basement, a bracketed wooden cornice, an ornamented entry and a cast-iron stoop. It sits in the Bottoms, the city's oldest African American neighborhood, on the side of Duke Street where many educated African Americans lived. Albert Johnson, born in Lynchburg to parents who had been enslaved, graduated from Howard University's medical college in 1892 and moved to Alexandria in 1894. He bought the house in 1896 and lived there until 1940, using the lower level as his medical office. In 1900 he was the only African American physician listed in the city directory. He led a fundraising committee for the men's ward of the new Alexandria Hospital and served as master of a Masonic lodge. The house was renovated in 1974, and its interior has been heavily altered.","period_of_significance":"1896-1940","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","B"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; renovated in 1974 with extensive interior alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.599492-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/8/6785/41678508/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/03001422.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03001422/7236dd0e43-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03001422/7236dd0e43-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"The original uploader was Ser Amantio di Nicolao at English Wikipedia.","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Albert_Johnson_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">The original uploader was Ser Amantio di Nicolao at English Wikipedia.</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Albert_Johnson_House.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"66000928","name":"Alexandria Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/alexandria-historic-district-66000928/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678508","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Albert_Johnson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5303954"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/alexandria/johnson-dr-albert-house-03001422/"}
