The present building was constructed in 1844 for a congregation organized in 1839.","why_significant":"The church is architecturally significant as a largely intact vernacular Greek Revival church in a rural upstate New York hamlet. It illustrates how rural Protestant congregations changed their tastes and practices through the nineteenth century. It is also the last surviving intact public building from the hamlet's period of prosperity as a port on the Genesee Valley Canal.","narrative":"This wood-frame church with a stone foundation sits on about one acre on Main Street in the hamlet of Tuscarora, Livingston County. Built in 1844, it is a Greek Revival building with a gable roof, a short two-stage tower, large pilasters, a heavy entablature and a parapet on its east facade. The congregation began in 1839 as a Dutch Reformed group formed largely by settlers from Cayuga County, and took its present name in 1852. Late nineteenth century changes added a center entrance, stained glass windows, a center aisle, angled pews, stamped tin ceiling and an enclosed vestibule. These alterations show a move away from the plain meetinghouse tradition toward more decorative Protestant interiors. The church is also the last intact public building from the hamlet's canal-era and railroad-era commercial prosperity, when the Genesee Valley Canal ran through Tuscarora. It remains an active place of worship.","period_of_significance":"1844-ca 1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used for religious purposes; the congregation has been yoked with the United Church in Mount Morris since 1966.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.912222-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/03001400.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03001400/b2ea5850d0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03001400/b2ea5850d0-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Presbyterian_Church_of_Tuscarora_Apr_11.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Presbyterian_Church_of_Tuscarora_Apr_11.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318643","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Presbyterian_Church_of_Tuscarora","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453710"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/first-presbyterian-church-of-tuscarora-03001400/"}
