It housed the Farmers Bank of Saratoga County and the home of entrepreneur Alfred Noxon, and it reflects Crescent's growth as a canal commerce center.","narrative":"Overlooking the great bend of the Mohawk River in Crescent, this three-story brick and stone building was erected about 1842 by Alfred Noxon, who combined a bank and his own home under one roof. A limestone basement once held commercial space, the bank room sat on the western side of the second story, and the family living quarters occupied the rest. Greek Revival detail includes a Tuscan-columned entrance, dentil trim, shouldered window and door casings, and a curved interior staircase. Iron bars set in the brick walls and an arched brick vault served as security. The ornate cast iron entrance steps came from Noxon's nearby foundry. Noxon was a major employer and developer in Crescent, a canal shipping point near the Erie Canal aqueduct. The Farmers Bank of Saratoga County, chartered in 1851, closed by 1859, yet the building remains an unusual surviving example of its type and a record of the canal era. It is still used as a residence.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1842-1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Historic functions were residence and bank; current use is residence, with the rear wing converted to a separate apartment in the late twentieth century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.619798-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/03001247.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03001247/a8622836d0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03001247/a8622836d0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tomprobkins","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NoxonBank.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tomprobkins</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NoxonBank.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100006512","name":"Church Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/church-hill-historic-district-100006512/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321600","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noxon_Bank_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7067314"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/saratoga-county/noxon-bank-building-03001247/"}
