Its Germanic barn is of particular interest, and the buildings show how the farm adapted over about 169 years of continuous operation. It is also a resource for studying agriculture and rural life in New Scotland and the Capital District.","narrative":"Bennett Hill Farm is a 30-acre farm complex in the hamlet of Clarksville, Town of New Scotland, Albany County. It began in 1797, when Jonas T. Bush leased the land from Stephen Van Rensselaer and a large timber-framed Germanic barn was built. A limestone farmhouse followed in 1821, and in the 1830s Rushmore Bennett's family added a Greek Revival frame wing with eyebrow windows and a recessed entrance with sidelights. Later buildings include a smokehouse, animal barn, wagon shed, fruit barn with concrete-lined cold storage rooms, and a tenant house that housed farm hands and, later, guests of the farm's seasonal inn. The farm stayed in the Bennett family for 133 years, growing sheep, apples, pears, oats and potatoes. It is recognized as a largely intact tenant farmstead that keeps its buildings and open setting, and as a resource for studying regional agricultural practices and rural life.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1797-1946","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The 30 acres east of the road remain open and in agricultural use. The buildings have been carefully restored and renovated under the current ownership, and a small flock of sheep uses the farmyard.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.633323-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/03001241.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03001241/0b8e0d0222-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03001241/0b8e0d0222-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"TrudiJ","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bennett_Hill_Farm,_New_York.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">TrudiJ</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bennett_Hill_Farm,_New_York.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316169","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bennett_Hill_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706178"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/albany-county/bennett-hill-farm-03001241/"}
