Local master builder Ben Muncil designed and built it in 1914.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a highly intact example of early 20th century Craftsman/Bungalow architecture adapted for civic use, and the work of master builder Benjamin A. Muncil. It has been the seat of town government since 1914 and a center of community social life. It is the only historic building owned by the town's people.","narrative":"Brighton's town hall is a modest one-story Craftsman/Bungalow building at the corner of State Route 86 and County Route 31, in the Adirondack Mountains of Franklin County. Built in 1914 to designs by local master builder Ben Muncil, it has dark stained cedar shingle walls, a fieldstone foundation, cobblestone porch piers and a series of telescoping gables that Muncil used in many of his bungalows. Inside is a large meeting room with wainscoted walls, with a vault and small service rooms behind. Changes have been minor: a metal roof, replacement windows matching the originals, a lift added at the porch and a rear gable enclosing the furnace room. Muncil began as a guide at Paul Smith's Hotel and went on to build many Adirondack camps. The hall has housed town board meetings, elections, court sessions and town offices, and has hosted veterans' services, clubs and a food pantry. Residents regard it as their only historic public building.","period_of_significance":"1914 - 1953","architect_builder":"Muncil, Benjamin A.","architectural_style":"Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a town hall and meeting hall; alterations over the years have been minimal, though some cobblestone piers at the front stairs need rebuilding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.254415-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/03001121.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03001121/71f05877cf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03001121/71f05877cf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner | Talk.
