Its hip roof, square plan, sawnwork porch and late Greek Revival details show how mid-century styles persisted in rural areas. The ca. 1880 kitchen and smoke house have similar details and retain excellent integrity.","narrative":"Set in the rolling farmland of southern Warren County, this one-story frame house near Inez was built about 1880 for Solomon and Kate Williams Jr., members of a family that owned thousands of acres in the area. It has a low hip roof, a nearly square plan, a sawnwork porch, a double-leaf front door and nine-over-nine windows. Inside, a central passage with louvered doors allowed ventilation while keeping the rear private. Original plaster, plank floors and three ca. 1880 mantels survive, and two rooms hold woodwork brought in about 1940 from nearby Shady Grove. A rear addition replaced earlier 1940 additions in 2000-2001. The property includes a ca. 1880 kitchen and smoke house, plus a barn, privy and chicken coop from about 1920-1940. It was listed for architecture as a modest, late example of classically influenced vernacular building, smaller than the area's antebellum plantation houses but sharing many of their features.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1880","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Other: hip-roof square plan house","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with secondary structures; a rear addition was built in 2000-2001, and the chicken coop and privy are in poor condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.519686-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/10/7227/47722710/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/03000968.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722710","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_and_Kate_Williams_Jr._House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24436310"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/warren-county/williams-jr-solomon-and-kate-house-03000968/"}
