It is an elongated T-shaped version of the Triple-A house type, and its slate roof, original materials and interior finishes remain largely intact. It was built for Wayland E. Poole, a farmer and sawmill operator.","narrative":"Built around 1911 across from his sawmill, this one-story frame farmhouse in the railroad crossroads community of Auburn, eastern Wake County, was home to farmer and sawmill operator Wayland E. Poole. A family account says he hand-picked the lumber for it at his own mill. The house has a T-shaped plan with a side-gabled main block, a front-gabled wing, a rear ell and a wraparound porch with original turned posts. Weatherboard siding, diamond-shaped gable vents and the original slate roof survive. Inside, each room has its own exterior door, and painted neoclassical mantels with mirrored overmantels, beadboard and plaster finishes remain. It was listed for its architecture: an elongated version of the Triple-A house type popular in Wake County around 1900, distinguished by its multiple gables, complex plan and unusually high integrity inside and out. About two acres are included, with a ca. 1911 shed or office and two 1990s wellhouses.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1911","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling with a secondary structure; the only noted alteration is a bathroom created by enclosing a rear porch in the early twentieth century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.679437-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/69/7185/47718569/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/03000967.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000967/7f568fda79-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000967/7f568fda79-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LikeGrantTookRichmond","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wayland_E._Poole_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LikeGrantTookRichmond</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wayland_E._Poole_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718569","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayland_E._Poole_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7975919"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/poole-wayland-e-house-03000967/"}
