It keeps its original exterior trim, interior moldings, doors, finishes and floor plan. It is also the work of well-known builder Thomas Bragg Sr. and was the home of his son Thomas Bragg Jr., later governor of North Carolina. Its two formal staircases are an unusual feature.","narrative":"Built around 1840 in the county seat of Jackson, North Carolina, this two-story frame house is a fine example of Greek Revival design adapted to a town lot. It is traditionally credited to Thomas Bragg Sr., a respected master builder, and was probably constructed for Junius Amis, a local state representative. In 1843 Thomas Bragg Jr., later governor of North Carolina and a U.S. senator, bought the property and lived there until 1855. The house has a five-bay, central-passage plan, hip roof, fluted corner pilasters, a full entablature, and window surrounds with rosette corner blocks. Inside, the original wood floors, plaster walls, eight-panel doors and some mantels survive. The most unusual feature is the pair of formal staircases, one in the main hall and one in the rear ell, possibly added so Bragg Sr. could have his own entrance when he lived with his son. Its early, well-preserved Greek Revival character and its link to a notable builder account for its listing for architecture.","period_of_significance":"1840","architect_builder":"Bragg, Thomas Sr., builder-architect","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling, as it was historically. Two later outbuildings on the lot are noncontributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.556159-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/82/7215/47721582/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/03000857.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000857/06d004856d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000857/06d004856d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Frank Womble","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amis-Bragg_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank Womble</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amis-Bragg_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"04000606","name":"Jackson Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/jackson-historic-district-04000606/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721582","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amis-Bragg_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19460200"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/northampton-county/amis-bragg-house-03000857/"}
