Under Criterion A it is tied to the Miller and Knight families, including pioneer Joseph Miller and river boat captain William Knight, who occupied it from 1815 to 1884. It is one of few surviving houses in Lawrence County with documented Ohio River associations.","narrative":"Overlooking the Ohio River from a level terrace in the hamlet of Miller, this 1.5-story frame house was built for Joseph Miller, a pioneer settler, sometime between about 1815 and 1835. Its mortise-and-tenon frame, weatherboard siding, center passage and two-room plan make it a so-called double-pen house, a vernacular form common in Ohio's early settlement period but more often built of log. Much of the original interior trim, Federal-style doors with spring latches, and mantels remain in place. Few early frame houses in Lawrence County escaped being covered with aluminum or vinyl siding, so this one is a rare, largely unaltered survivor. Miller was an Indian scout and mail carrier on the river, and his granddaughter married Captain William Knight, a steamboat master. Members of the family owned the property continuously from its construction. The house is currently vacant and being restored.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1815-1835","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century/Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed current function is vacant and being restored; no outbuildings survive, and a cistern with a cast iron pump remains at the rear.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.441318-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/03000720.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989633","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lawrence-county/miller-knight-house-03000720/"}
