Main Street and E. Market Street within the original 1833 North Village plat. It holds 17 contributing and 5 noncontributing buildings, mostly from the 1860s to 1950.","why_significant":"The district records Akron's growth from a canal town into a railroad, interurban and rubber-industry city. It was a center of commerce, communications, transportation and education. It also holds a concentration of academic-style commercial and civic buildings, including the interurban terminal, a substation, a gas company building and a post office.","narrative":"Main-Market Historic District occupies about 30 acres of downtown Akron, Ohio, around North and South Main Street and East Market Street. It follows the street grid laid out in 1833 as the North Village, also called Cascade Village after a mill race built in 1831 to power industry. Seventeen contributing buildings survive, ranging from a Greek Revival masonry commercial building to Beaux Arts, Chicago Commercial, Neo-Classical Revival and Art Deco structures. Among them are the Northern Ohio Traction & Light interurban terminal, completed in 1918 and enlarged by two stories in 1931, and its 1912 brick substation. Also notable are the East Ohio Gas building and the Akron Post Office and Federal Building. Together they show how the area moved from canal-era commerce to railroads, interurban lines, utilities and the rubber boom, when the city's population rose 200 percent between 1910 and 1920. The period of significance runs from 1863 to 1950, and the district was recognized for its contributions to commerce, communications, transportation, education and architecture.","period_of_significance":"1863-1950","architect_builder":"Harpster & Bliss, Frank O.
