Several outbuildings stand with it.","why_significant":"The house is a substantially intact, representative example of cobblestone construction from the Middle Period (ca. 1835-1845) in Ontario County. It is also a fine vernacular Greek Revival dwelling, with a pedimented Doric portico and intact interior woodwork. It is additionally tied to the agricultural history of the area through the long-running Barden family farm and its dairy and creamery operations.","narrative":"Built around 1836, this L-shaped cobblestone farmhouse sits on the west side of Wabash Road in rural Seneca, on a 230-acre farm in southeast Ontario County. Its walls are made of variously colored field cobbles laid in rows, with smooth limestone quoins at the corners and stone lintels and sills around the openings. The five-bay main block has a pedimented portico with four fluted Doric columns, and the interior keeps Greek Revival fireplace surrounds and trim with anthemion corner blocks. Levi Barden inherited the farm from his father, Thomas Barden III, a landholder who was murdered in 1812. Levi's son Vincent later ran a creamery and butter company on the property. Late nineteenth and early twentieth century outbuildings survive, including a frame barn, a scale house and a dairy barn. The house is one of about 101 cobblestone buildings in Ontario County. It was listed for its intact cobblestone construction, its Greek Revival character and its place in local agricultural history.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1836 - 1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling on a working farm; the farmland is leased to a large-scale farmer, and the dairy herd was sold in the early 1960s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.809348-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/03000690.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000690/6486e4e9ef-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000690/6486e4e9ef-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Weindan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Levi_Barden_Cobblestone2.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Weindan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Levi_Barden_Cobblestone2.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314113","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levi_Barden_Cobblestone_Farmhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6535363"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ontario-county/barden-levi-cobblestone-farmhouse-03000690/"}
