It is also significant for education as Poulan's public library and, until 1931, the only public library in Worth County. It also matters for women's history as the meeting place of the Poulan Women's Club from 1916 through the 1930s (Criterion A).","narrative":"Poulan Library is a one-room, one-story public library on Church Street in the small southwest Georgia town of Poulan. Built in 1908, it is made of cast-concrete block molded to look like rough-faced stone, a low-cost alternative to real stone that was popular in the early twentieth century. The pyramidal roof has wide flared eaves, and all four facades are symmetrical with quoins at the corners and concrete lintels and sills. Inside, the original plaster walls, bead-board ceiling, wood trim and wood floor remain. The library was chartered in 1908 with help from town founder John G. McPhaul, and its original book collection was a gift from philanthropist and Michigan governor Chase Osborn. It served as the only public library in Worth County until a county library opened in Sylvester in 1931, and the Poulan Women's Club met there from 1916 through the 1930s. The building continues to function as the town library.","period_of_significance":"1908 - 1953","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The building still serves as the town library.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.791304-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/03000679.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000679/4df001d39d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000679/4df001d39d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Poulan_Library.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Poulan_Library.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209997","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poulan_Library","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16898773"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/worth-county/poulan-library-03000679/"}
